The spiral shape is common in nature.  It has also adorned buildings for more than a millennia (it is thought to have ornamented the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem).  Fascinatingly we find, on examination and experiment,  that in parallel with its high form or aesthetic value, that the (concrete) column has greater function – it can withstand more load, shows greater toughness and greater ductility – if it is reinforced with spiral reinforcement.  The great human-made structures benefit from a similar though hidden-to-the-eye structure that is our DNA.  However small we may at times feel, our creations or contributions may come to be regarded as sizeable, there is no reason why we cannot set out to achieve something of substance.
