Coloured pencil drawing from the Holloway thought to have influenced the setting of Geoffrey Household’s ‘Rogue Male’. These sunken paths mark the passage of time and the habit of hoof, foot, and wheel journeying, probably over 500 years given its fabulous depth. Given the recusant history of the landscape here – the catholic chapel at North Chideock and the relics thought to be of Saint Wite at Whitchurch Canonicorum – and the relative ease with which Jesuits could have landed on the Chesil coast it is likely to have played its part in helping priests to disappear into the landscape.
