The Cuckmere river meanders into the English Channel at Cuckmere Haven. The backdrop to the low-lying haven is the majestic, chalk cliff line that includes Beachy Head: evidence of force and age. The weight of the ice during the Ice Age forced the land to deform downward. The Ice Age ended, the glaciers retreated, this enormous weight was removed, resulting in an isostatic rebound – the chalk cliffs emerged. We journey over them, while they too still move upwards, perhaps by as little as 1cm/year (GPS data tells us this).
